Breathing in asbestos fibres can lead to the development of mesothelioma, a devastating and fatal form of cancer. According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), almost 50,000 men and almost 9,000 women died of the disease between 1981 – 2017. Today, on average 2,500 lives are lost to mesothelioma in the UK each year, many as a result of exposure to asbestos decades before, especially those who worked in industrial or manual roles.
