Thompsons says farewell to senior solicitor voted to become MP

Serious injury compensation claims

Andrew McDonald, who has more than 25 years’ experience of dealing with serious injury compensation claims and a specialisation in claims on behalf of military personnel, won a 10,201 majority in a by-election triggered by the death of sitting MP Sir Stuart Bell.

During his 13 years with Thompsons Andrew’s expertise saw two Royal Air Force claimants each receive seven figure sums in damages after the Court of Appeal agreed that there was a causal link between damage to the central nervous system and exposure to toxins used in the painting of aircraft in the late 1980s.

He also represented the families of submariners killed following an explosion beneath the Arctic on board the nuclear powered submarine HMS Tireless.

Represented injured people and their families

Following his election Andrew said: “I feel so proud to represent the town I was born and brought up in. I promised to fight for all the people who live here. The people of the town have spoken.”

He later added: “I’ll miss many things at Thompsons where detailed knowledge of the law was encouraged and was essential to gain justice for the working people I represented. However, I look forward to the challenges of representing my constituents in Parliament.”

Stephen Cavalier from Thompsons said: “Andrew has been a talented and hard working colleague. We are delighted for him and know that the people of Middlesbrough will have a dedicated and effective MP.

“At Thompsons Andrew represented working people and their families with commitment and enthusiasm and I know he will continue to do so in his new role.”
